LOS ANGELES: Pop giant Michael Jackson, who took to the stage as a child star and set the world dancing to the thumping rhythms of his music in the 1970s, died on Thursday, online website reported. He was 50.

The website reported that Jackson suffered a heart attack just after 12:00 pm (1900 GMT) local time and paramedics were unable to revive him.

Jackson’s manager Tohme E. Tohme was not immediately available for comment when contacted by media. Officials at UCLA Medical Center where Jackson was treated also could not be reached for comment.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Devin Gales would not confirm Jackson’s identity but said paramedics went to an address corresponding to the star’s home at 12:21 pm (1921 GMT) and the person was taken to UCLA Medical Center.

An unidentified family member earlier told TMZ — the first outlet to report that Jackson had suffered a cardiac arrest — that the star was in “really bad shape.”

Michael’s father Joe Jackson told E! Online he was aware of the emergency but did not know further details.

“I am in Las Vegas, but yes, people in Los Angeles called me and are with Michael and tell me he was taken to the hospital,” he said. “I am not sure what’s wrong. I am waiting to hear back from them.”

The reports came as Jackson prepared to make a keenly anticipated concert comeback in London, his first series of shows in more than a decade and the first since his 2005 acquittal on child molestation charges.

However those concerts — billed as the “final curtain” — had been thrown into doubt after Jackson pushed back the opening dates last month.

Organizers of the concerts had stressed the delay was not linked to Jackson’s health.

Promoters and producers AEG Live said the rescheduling was done because of the “sheer magnitude” of the show and the desire for fans attending the opening nights to get the same experience planned for all 50 shows.

In a press conference from the United States broadcast over the Internet, AEG Live president Randy Phillips was asked about Jackson’s health and said: “I would trade my body for his tomorrow. He’s in fantastic shape.”

While Jackson reigned as the “King of Pop” in the 1980s, his once-stellar career had been overshadowed by his colorful public behavior, his startling physical transformation and multiple allegations of child abuse.

Jackson lived as a virtual recluse following his 2005 acquittal on charges including child molestation and plotting to kidnap his young accuser.

Despite his acquittal, the trial was a body blow from which the pop music superstar struggled to recover.

Four years later, Jackson is still worshipped by fans for revolutionizing music, dance and music videos at the peak of his success.

The attention however paid to him in recent years has been less flattering, focusing on apparent cosmetic surgery — which he denies — his baby dangling antics and a decade of swirling child abuse allegations.

The Senate passed the Cash for Clunkers Program today, which gives consumers with cars that get less than 18 miles per gallon the ability to turn them in for a $3,500 or $4,500 cash voucher. The bill was nearly defeated by Republicans, but Democratic support saved the day in part due to Obama's lobbying of the program. The President still needs to sign the bill into law.

Although many people believe that the program is designed to reduce global warming emissions through the eradication of gas guzzling cars, its true purpose is to help out struggling automakers and car dealers with new car sales. A person who receives a credit as part of the program cannot buy a used car with the monies. Car sales in 2009 are predicted to be nearly half of what they were in 2008.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat and one of the states most affected by the turmoil in the auto industry. After the bill was passed, Stabenow said, This is an emergency for families and small businesses - for an industry that has been the backbone of our economy for a generation."

The program will be implemented by the Transportation Department and this is expected to happen by early August. As part of their duties, the Transportation Department will create a public website for consumers and dealers to get more information, will certify "cash for clunkers" dealers and distribute the program vouchers.

The first round of the United States Open at Bethpage greeted golfers with waves of heavy rain and gusts of wind Thursday morning, turning the job of hitting golf shots and holding golf umbrellas into a perilous enterprise. Play was suspended at 10:16 a.m. because of heavy rain.

It was fitting that one of the early leaders in such tough conditions was Andrew Parr. He was one under after two holes, a score held by a few others, usually briefly, as players struggled in the wind and rain. The greens were continually squeegeed, sometimes while players were on them, to keep the water off.

When Tiger Woods and his marquee group, which also included Ángel Cabrera and Padraig Harrington, stepped to the first tee with the rain falling steadily, fans near the crowded the tee box managed to keep a sense of humor. After applause greeted Woods’s introduction like a crack of thunder, one fan yelled out, “Go, Padraig.” Another shouted, “Go, Tiger.” There was a pause, and then from across the bleachers, someone yelled, “O.K., I’ll bite.” Cabrera said earlier in the week that he would not be intimidated by playing in front of the large, boisterous crowds that follow Woods. On the first hole, he did not handle the commotion well. He drove into the left rough, but Woods drove even farther left, his ball landing in front of a merchandise tent.

Woods put his second shot in a greenside bunker, after which photographers and fans scurried for position. Photographers were trying to get back inside the ropes and fans were trying to hold their ground in a scrum that looked like the Holland Tunnel entrance at rush hour.

A policeman was trying in vain to get people to stand still while a few yards away Cabrera stood over his ball. Instead of backing off the shot, he hit the shot and struck it poorly, then looked back and glared at the crowd.

His ball landed well in front of the green, leading to a bogey. Woods saved par, and Harrington, who was on the green in two, three-putted for bogey.

When the group arrived at the second green, it was met by six volunteers with squeegees. They dried the green while the players were reading their putts, then took more swipes at the green between putts.

It was Cabrera, though, who steadied himself while Woods and Harrington struggled. Harrington fell to four-over par by the fifth hole, where Woods made double-bogey after missing the fairway with his drive, hitting into a bunker and missing a 15-foot putt for bogey. That put him at two over.

Woods birdied No. 6 with a 25-foot putt to get one of those strokes back.

Course officials had adjusted the course setup in the morning to account for the weather, moving up the tees on four holes — Nos. 7, 9, 10 and 12 — because the ball would not roll at all on the wet course.

“We have two to four people at every green using squeegees, sometimes between every putt,” Jim Hyler, vice president of the United States Golf Association and chairman of the championship committee, said before play was suspended. “The issue we’re going to have is the 18th green. If we weren’t working on it, it might be a pond right now. We’re just watching the weather to see how bad it gets. So far we’re O.K. The golf course is draining well except in a few spots, like 18 and hole No. 2. There’s no lightning on the radar.”

The forecast currently predicts steady rain all day, with up to an inch of rain total. The temperature is not expected to top 65 degrees.

“We’ve also adjusted where we considered putting certain hole locations,” Hyler said. “We had to choose spots that are less risky in terms of water buildup. We put holes away from the green locations where water might build up.”

Friday’s weather is expected to be dry but cloudy, with temperatures reaching the mid-70s.

Obscenity Appears On Yearbook Cover

The cover was designed by an outgoing high school senior and shortly after the yearbook was distributed, students noticed a hidden message inside of that design.

"You have to turn it upside down and then it is right there," said incoming senior Katie Rownd.

The hidden message contains the "F" word.

When the school principal learned of the obscenity, he sent home a letter to parents. Attached to that letter, an apology from the student who designed the cover.

The student wrote, " I cannot begin to explain the miserable feeling I brought upon myself, when I betrayed the trust of all of you. I apologize for offending anyone and everyone. It is unfortunate that I did not recognize the big responsibility and honor given to me when asked to design the cover of the Shaker Heights yearbook. I offer my sincere apologies."

The school stopped issuing yearbooks when they learned of the hidden message and the school is now distributing "cosmetically altered" versions of the yearbook.

Students can also bring in their original yearbooks and someone will cover the obscenity for them. One senior, though, says she plans on keeping her yearbook just the way it is.

"Thirty years down the road, it's kinda funny to flip it upside down and be like, oh look what's hidden!" she said.

Indian Army Working To Modernize Its Medical Services

Last month terror strikes in the country’s financial capital, Mumbai have made India’s Armed Forces to modernize their medical services so as to minimize the reaction time during emergency situation.
Commenting on this, Lt Gen Yogendra Singh, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) said, “We are streamlining the disaster management system in all the major hospitals to minimise the response time from two hours to one hour.”
Speaking on the occasion of Army Medical Corps anniversary, Lt Singh said that the decision to compress the response time to ease medical services to the injured at the earliest has been taken following the Mumbai carnage.
He also pointed out that the earlier concept was a reaction time of six hours that has now been cut down to two hours and now armed forces are working out to respond it within an hour.
On the question of the current tension between India and Pakistan, he said that all the hospitals were put on alert.
He further added that as per the modernisation plan, army hospitals have been provided with the latest medical equipment such as MRI, Lasik Laser machine, oxygen generation plants.
Later on speaking with the media persons on the same occasion, Director General of Medical Services (Army) Lt Gen N K Parmar said the armed forces may consider sending short service commissioned officers for the UN assignments to encourage the young people to join the services.
“We are considering the proposal of giving them the opportunity to work under UN missions as it will encourage them to join the armed forces,” said Lt Parmar.

Twin Blasts in Northern Iraq 2 Killed

Washington: Pakistan's decision of mobilising it''s troops to its eastern border with India is being touted as a trick to get the `US benefit' and have the current pressure on Islamabad eased.
One theory doing the rounds in Washington is that if India falls prey to Islamabad's trick, it would overshadow the Mumbai terror attack and because the world would be anxious at the prospect of two nuclear powers going to war, the Daily Times reported.
Currently, the US has expressed its surprise over Pakistan's troop mobilisation on its eastern border, as it has seen little hint of aggression from the Indian army.
Even during the last week, the US had assured Pakistan that India was not likely to launch a war. The US has also urged Islamabad to dismantle the cross-border terrorism mechanism.
Pakistan is yet to decide a strategy besides constantly asking for the `evidence' in the Mumbai attacks.
Earlier, Pakistan's Ambassador Husain Haqqani to the US had said, "Pakistan does not seek war, but we need to be vigilant against threats of war emanating from the other side of our eastern border."
He also stated that both the countries should refrain from the blame game and unite against terrorism, which is a common menace for the both the nations.

Islamabad: Has Swat, the principal city of the restive South Waziristan region in Pakistan's northwest, fallen to the Taliban? It would seem so from an editorial in leading English daily on Saturday. "There has been no official announcement, no victory parades or televised addresses by the victorious party, no cheering crowds welcoming the liberators - but Swat, to all intents and purposes, has fallen to the Taliban," The News said in an editorial headlined "The fall of Swat". "It is the announcement that all girls education in the valley will cease from January 15 that is the tipping point," the editorial added. All schools that teach girls have been ordered by the Taliban to close by that date or face the inevitable consequences - being blown up being the most usual of these. They have already blown up well over a hundred girls schools, principally those operated by the government, but have moved in recent weeks to blowing up private institutions as well. "Female education has virtually ceased anyway, and the Taliban announcement merely puts the seal on what is a manifest reality - the government has lost the battle for Swat and the Taliban have won," the editorial said. "They operate at will, go where they like, issue orders and proclamations that a terrified public are unable to ignore and broadcast their message of obscurantism on the radio for all to hear - and obey," it added. Noting that the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) government had called for assistance, the editorial said: "But little seems to be forthcoming. "Refugees stream out of the valley, the operators of private schools try to fight a rearguard action, the tourist trade is dead and buried long ago and the beautiful valley of Swat now enters a time of darkness." President Asif Ali Zardari's Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is a junior partner in the NWFP ruling coalition that is led by the Awami National Party of Chief Minister Asfandar Wali Khan, grandson of the legendary Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan - better known as the Frontier Gandhi.

He was speaking at a special prayer ceremony to mark the first death anniversary of the former premier Benazir Bhutto. Bhutto was assasinated in a suicide attack while she was leaving an election campaign rally on 27 December 2007.
However, Gilani warned India of severe consequences in case Pakistan was provoked.
''We will not be the people who will be the first to take any sort of misadventurism but at the same time we are capable of defending our own dear country," he said.

Gaza: Israeli aircraft attacked Hamas security compounds across Gaza on Saturday, killing at least 120 people and causing widespread panic and confusion, according to Hamas and Israeli officials.

In one of the compounds, the bodies of more than a dozen uniformed security officers were seen lying on the ground. One officer who survived raised his index finger in a show of Muslim faith and defiance. Gaza health official Moawiya Hassanain said 120 people were killed in the strikes. Islamabad, Dec 27: India has informed Pakistan that it has not engaged in any sort of troop build-up along the frontier and sought firm action against terrorist camps and militant groups operating from the Pakistani soil. New Delhi has also told Islamabad that it has no plans for a military action, but wanted a combination of "executive action and judicial processes" against terrorist elements like the Lashker-e-Taiba and its front organisation Jamaat-ud-Dawah, which have been linked to the Mumbai attacks. This message was conveyed during Indian High Commissioner Satyabrata Pal's meeting with Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir here on Friday. Indian Deputy High Commissioner Manpreet Vohra was also present, diplomatic sources said. The Pakistani side said any surgical strike by India in response to the Mumbai terror attacks would be seen as an "act of war". To this, the Indian officials stated that there was "no reason for the war hysteria" being witnessed in Pakistan, the sources said. The Indian officials made it clear that there had been no build-up of troops along the Pakistan frontier and that New Delhi had no plans for military action, the sources said. The Indian side also conveyed the message that "words and commitments" were not adequate in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, which were "just a symptom of the larger problem" of terrorists operating from the Pakistani soil, the sources said. "There is a need for firm action against such elements. We don't see the shutting down of terrorist camps. Armed militants with guns are still moving around and terrorist camps are still operational," a source said. The sources said India wanted a combination of "executive action and judicial processes" against terrorist elements like the LeT and JuD. Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma asserted that Pakistan needed to launch proceedings against terrorism as India had already given it the needed evidence.

PIA paid close to Rs 2 crores penalty for transporting illegal passengers abroad

Islamabad : As if its fragile financial health was not bad enough, the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has landed itself the dubious distinction of being forced to shell out close to Rs 2 crores for transporting illegal passengers abroad.
According to a latest report by the Auditor General of Pakistan Revenue (AGP), the PIA has paid the massive amount as penalty for carrying illegal passengers.
"PIA has paid 17.066 million rupees between 2004 and 2006 for transporting passengers without legal documents to five countries," the Daily Times said quoting the 2007-08 annual report of the Auditor General of Pakistan Revenue (AGP).
"Fines were paid to local authorities in between 2004 and 2006 in five cities - New York, Amsterdam, Doha, Jeddah and London," the report added.
The report also revealed that PIA paid 14.926 million rupees as compensation for lost baggage and 227.285 million rupees for food and accommodation for passengers due to flight delays at various stations.
The AGP report lamented the management of PIA for the huge losses it has incurred over the years.
"The losses were incurred due to sheer negligence and inefficient management of the PIA staff and the management should investigate and find those responsible," it said.

Islamabad: The reality of the lone surviving terrorist behind the Mumbai carnage Ajmal Kasab may be being denied by the Pakistani Government, but the real problem facing the Pakistani society is that there has been a gradual transformation leading to the creation of pockets of population or youth, especially in Punjab province, that behave exactly like Kasab, a leading Islamabad based daily has said.
The Dawn said that some journalists had apparently met the family, talked to the villagers and dug out references to Kasab and his parents in the electoral rolls of Faridkot, but now there is no mention of the family in the electoral list.
Even President Asif Ali Zardari, unmoved by reported comments of the man said to be Kasab's father, says that he has seen no evidence to prove Kasab is Pakistani.
The issue may be resolved for short-term. "We can all forget about Kasab but one must ask what is happening to the youth from Pakistan, and in this context `mainland' Punjab, who are involved in suicide attacks within the country, perhaps even in the region," the paper asked.
Those involved in the Marriott blast are said to be from Lashkar-i-Jhangavi. The young man who tried to carry out a suicide attack in Wah Cantt some time ago and caught from Khushab and the man responsible for the post-Marriott blast at Islamabad's Police Lines belonged to Rahim Yar Khan.
A popular argument is that the transformation of those living an ordinary existence into individuals with an extremist bent of mind is caused by poverty, Dawn said.
It is indeed undeniable that years of poverty compounded with poor governance have disillusioned many people who then seek an outlet through aligning themselves with various militant outfits.
Given that these outfits continue to be effective in certain areas, it is apparent that people are being drawn to them. In fact, in the days before 9/11 there were about 72 militant outfits that have since regrouped and consolidated themselves in smaller numbers but with greater power and influence.
Resultantly, a lot of activities are centred in and around Punjab, which was always considered socially and economically more advanced than other parts of the country such as the Frontier, Balochistan and Sindh, the paper said.

Cabinet Takes Significant Decisions In Recent Meeting

The union government gave nod to an integrated energy policy to ensure the energy security and adequate economic growth in a recent meeting of the union cabinet. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of PM Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Briefing the reporters after the meeting, Union home minister, Mr P Chidambaram said that the policy is designed on the basis of suggestion of experts to achieve the desired growth targets. The government would set up a monitoring committee to implement the integrated energy policy under the chairmanship of the Cabinet Secretary. Mr. Chidambaram added that the country needs to sustain the growth rate of 9 per cent to eradicate poverty and overall development of the nation.
The cabinet also approved an amount of Rs 6,000 crore to revamp about 23,000 water bodies in the country over the 11th five year Plan (2007-2112). The water body's restoration scheme would be implemented with the help of the World Bank. It is aimed to provide irrigation facilities to an additional 7.50 lakh hectares.
The government would also set up a National Meat and Poultry Processing Board in Delhi which would be registered under the ministry of food processing industries. Cabinet also approved the restructuring of the Defense Estates Organization to create more posts in Group A and Group B and abolish 674 posts in Group C and D. The restructuring is aimed to satisfy the functional needs of the army, besides re-organizing the territorial jurisdiction of Army Commands.

Tributes paid to Israeli victims of 26/11 terror strikes

Special prayers on the occasion of ‘Hanukkah’, the Jewish festival of lights, were conducted at the Gateway of India on Thursday (Dec 25), to pay tributes to victims of November 26 Mumbai terror strikes.
A menorah was also lit and speakers condemned the terror attacks. Grandparents of Moshe Holtzberg, the two-year-old son of Rabbi Gabriel Holtzberg and Rivika, killed during the three-day terror siege last month, were among over 50 members of the Jewish community who prayed for the victims.
Moshe was saved by his 44-year-old nanny Sandra Samuel after terrorists stormed into the Nariman House and killed all the occupants, including his parents. The nanny accompanied Moshe with his grandparents and bodies of his parents to Israel.
Prayers in memory of the victims was also scheduled to be held at the Gateway of India.

BSP MLA remanded in judicial custody

BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari, arrested in connection with the brutal murder of an Uttar Pradesh PWD engineer, was on Thursday (December 25) remanded in judicial custody for 14 days (till January 7) by a court in Auraiya.
The order remanding 48-year-old Tiwari in judicial custody was passed by Chief Judicial Magistrate Samarpal Singh. The MLA will be lodged in Etawah jail.
Tight security arrangements were made in the court premises in the wake of violent protests against the killing of PWD engineer M K Gupta who was allegedly beaten to death by Tiwari and his associates after he turned down their demand for a huge sum for birthday celebration of Chief Minister Mayawati, a charge denied by the state government.
Earlier, Kanpur (rural) district police handed over Tiwari to their Auraiya counterparts. Kanpur (rural) SP N Ravindra said that the BSP MLA was handed over to Auraiya police so that he could be produced before the district court there.

Jews Pray For Peace for Mumbai Terror Attack Victims at Gateway of India

Mumbai: Members of the Jew community assembled at the Gateway of India on Thursday to pray for the departed souls in the Mumbai terror attack during the last week of November. They also lit religious lamps in the memory of the deceased.
Grandparents of Moshe Holtzberg, the two-year old son of the Israeli Rabbi parents who died in the recent Mumbai attack were among the participants of this memorial service held at the Gateway of India and also at Nariman House on the eve of completion of one-month of the terror attacks.
The Rabbi, who conducted the prayer ceremony lit series of torch-like lamps while the congregation sang hymns.
Rabbi Kotlarsky, while addressing the congregation of mourners, said that instead of taking up arms in retaliation against those responsible for the gory death of the Jews at Nariman House and others elsewhere in Mumbai, they would just pray. They wished to relay the message of peace for the entire mankind.
Last month''s (November 26) assault on Mumbai killed 179 people including a number of foreigners.
Moshe''s uncle condemning the attacks said that the militants have played with the lives innocents and now it was the time to spread love and bring love to the whole world.
"It''s time now to bring light around the world. Even if there is darkness you find the real way to understand that you have another way besides the terrorists. To bring light to the whole world just with love into the ways of all people," said Simon Rossenvery, uncle of Moshe Holtzberg.
Two gunmen had stormed the six-storey Nariman House, a transit home for Jews and took eight people hostage, including the 28-year-old wife Rivka and child of Israeli-born Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg (29). The couple had come to Mumbai in 2003 to run a synagogue and conduct Torah classes as part of the worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch Movement.
The orphaned Moshe is now under the care of his mother''s parents after his nanny miraculously rushed him to safety while militants roamed the Jewish centre where the family lived and worked.

Chintaman Waranj, another survivor at the Nariman House said that he was satisfied with the security men around his area now and there wasn't any fear left in him inspite of being injured in the attacks.
"India had won a cricket match that day and we heard some firecrackers being burst. We went to see that but later we realised some men were firing and in which a bullet was shot at my leg," said Chintaman Waranj.

Acid attack victim’s condition still critical

The condition of acid attack victim Swapnika, the engineering girl student from Warangal, continues to remain critical, doctors attending on her said today (December 24).
“Swapnika’s condition remains critical. She is having fungal infection and suffering from continuous high temperature,” a senior doctor said.
Dr D Surendra Rao said they were consulting a group of doctors on removing Swapnika’s eyes which have been totally burnt. “We are waiting for her temperature to come down to enable us to remove her eyes,” he said.
A few days ago debridement surgery and skin grafting has been performed on her burnt body parts, but, “We could not carry out skin grafting on all the burnt parts,” he said.
Rao attributed it to non-availability of skin for undertaking skin grafting, adding the raw areas on the body resulted in increased infections.
Swapnika sustained fourth degree burns and the burn injuries had reached up to the bones, he added.
Swapnika and her friend Praneetha suffered serious burns when acid was thrown on them allegedly by three youths at Warangal on December 10. The three youths were subsequently killed in an encounter when they tried to attack policmen in their escape bid.
Meanwhile, TDP MP from Warangal E Dayakar Rao called on the parents of Swapnika today and favoured that she be sent abroad for treatment.
If the government did not come forward, the TDP is ready to bear the expenses for Swapnika’s treatment abroad, he said.

Cong, LJP, SP come together over killing of engineer

Congress and its UPA allies LJP and SP on Thursday (Dec 25) slammed the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh as demand for her resignation grew louder in the wake of the murder of an engineer allegedly by a BSP MLA.
Samajawadi Party (SP) Chief Mulayam Singh reacted saying there is indeed no need for a CBI inquiry as it is a clear case of murder orchestrated by Shekhar Tiwari and his men.
“The BSP isn’t interested in improving the law and order situation in the state. It’s a fact that Manoj Gupta has been murdered. There is no need for a CBi inquiry. It’s a clear case of murder orchestrated by the MLA and his men,” he said.
Accusing the Mayawati government, Mulayam Singh said, “Mayawati government is involved in extortion activities. The killing of the PWD engineer is not the first case of murder. So many such incidents happened before. And the lawless of this government is such that it does not initiate proper investigation.”
LJP chief and Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan demanded resignation of the Chief Minister and a CBI rpt CBI probe into the killing and was supported SP General Secretary Amar Singh. “There are no differences among SP, Congress and LJP over this issue. We are together. LJP is in touch with Congress and SP leaders and we will organise a joint protest,” Paswan told reporters.
At a separate press conference Amar Singh asked Home Minister P Chidambaram to “wake up” to the incidents in UP. “I have already briefed external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee and Ahmad Patel, the political advisor to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi regarding the developments in UP,” he said.
Singh also dared the Chief Minister to resign and face legal action and declared that the birthday of Mayawati on January 15 will be observed as counter condemnation day. The Congress meanwhile charged the BSP government with indulging in loot and extortion and said that even the bureaucracy has joined hands with the ruling party leaders there.
“Independent India has not seen such open loot and extortion..Issuing threats to beat somebody and then beating them up has become common in the state,” AICC General Secretary in-charge of UP Digvijay Singh said.

CBI Team Records Testimony in 1984 Aanti-Sikh Riots Case in San Francisco

New Delhi : A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team has started the process of recording evidence of Jasbir Singh, a witness of 1984 anti-Sikh riots case involving the then parliamentarian Jagdish Tytler.
The testimony of Jasbir Singh started 11.30 a. m (U. S time) on Thursday and lasted till 5.00 p. m on Christmas Day at GADAR Memorial, San Francisco, CA. The testimony will continue on Friday.
The two-member CBI team, which is visiting the U. S, recorded the statement of Jasbir Singh for four hours in San Francico. The testimony, however, was scheduled to resume on December 26.
The testimony of the other witness Surinder Singh was recorded by the CBI team on Dec. 23 in New York.
The decision of the CBI to record statements of key witnesses Jasbir Singh and Surinder Singh in the United States has been welcomed by the 1984 riot victims.
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a New York based Attorney, who is advocating the case of Surinder Singh and Jasbir Singh told the ANI over phone that the arrival of CBI team in the over two decades old case has strengthened their hope to get justice under the Constitution of India.
Around three thousand Sikhs were reportedly killed in the communal riots that followed the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. It has been alleged that Jagdish Tytler provoked public fury against the Sikh community after the assassination .
On September 29, 2007, CBI filed a closure report regarding Jagdish Tytler''s role in massacre of Sikhs, stating witness Jasbir Singh could not be traced and other witness Surinder Singh has refused to record statements.
On December 18, 2007 Sanjiv Jain, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Delhi Court ordered CBI to re-investigate the role of Jagdish Tytler in the riots and record the statement of key witness Jasbir Singh.

Vajpayee turns 85; Prez, VP, PM greet him

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday (Dec 25) turned 85, but there were no birthday celebrations in view of last month’s Mumbai terror attacks. President Pratibha Patil was among the first to send greetings to the BJP veteran, Rastrapathi Bhawan sources said. She sent flowers and greetings to Vajpayee, they said. Vice President Hamid Ansari sent flowers to the former PM’s residence, BJP sources said.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh drove to the octogenarian leader’s Krishna Menon Marg residence here to wish him on his 85th birthday. Singh was with Vajpayee for about 15 minutes. Leader of Opposition and Vajpayee’s longtime colleague L K Advani also went to the former Prime Minister’s residence to express his birthday wishes, BJP sources said.
BJP chief Rajnath Singh, senior party leader Jaswant Singh, Uttarakhand Chief Minister B C Khanduri, former BJP president Bangaru Laxman, INLD chief Om Prakash Chautaula and former National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra also wished Vajpayee.
Several other leaders from BJP, its NDA allies and those from other parties also sent bouquets and birthday wishes to Vajpayee, who was born on this day in 1924. Vajpayee had expressed his desire a couple of days ago not to celebrate his birthday in view of the terror strikes in Mumbai.
Former Delhi chief minister Madan Lal Khuarana, who met the BJP veteran briefly, later told reporters that he had requested the former PM to contest the coming Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow. “He merely nodded to the suggestion and did not say anything more,” Khurana said.
Bharti Airtel chief Sunil Mittal and senior BJP leader V K Malhotra also wished Vajpayee on the ocassion. The BJP veteran has been suffering from age-related ailments for the past two years and has kept away from public view.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today also greeted Vajpayee on his 85th birthday. The residents of Prini village, known as the former PM’s second home, celebrated his birthday today in a low key manner.
Locals offered puja at the famous Nag Devta temple at Prini, near Manali, praying for long life of the veteran BJP leader, village head Kundan Kumar said. Vajpayee used to visit Prini every summer till 2006, before his health deteriorated.

A case has been registered against Madhya Pradesh’s Samajwadi Party MLA Kishor Samrade for announcing a reward of Rs one crore to the person who kills Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray, police said on Thursday (Dec 25).
Samrade had announced the reward against Raj through media two months ago. A petition was filed against Samrade by MNS city president Keshav Wagh at the Pimpalgaon Baswant court, some 25 km from here, police said.
Based on the directions from the court, Ojhar police in the district registered a case against the MLA, they added.

With the certification announced yesterday, the terminal also known as DP World Nhava Sheva has become the 15th among the giant operator’s network of 48 terminals worldwide, to get the distinction.
The Certification, undertaken by independent Rotterdam-based Dutch auditing firm and Maritime Classification Society of excellence Det Norske Veritas(DNV), validates the NSICT’s mechanisms and processes to address security vulnerabilities at strategic and operational levels, as well as its preparedness for preventive action plans.
The Nava Sheva terminal, which boast of state-of-the art infrastructure and world class services, is already certified for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 27001 management systems.
The terminal, was granted the certification after a thorough security audit of the facility, focused principally on container security, physical access controls, personnel security, procedural security, security training and threat awareness, business partner requirements and IT Security.

Thousands Gather For Benazir Bhutto Commemorations

KARACHI:Tens of thousands of people massed on Friday at the tomb of martyred former premier Benazir Bhutto, one day before ceremonies to mark the first anniversary of her assassination, a party official said.
More than 35,000 people had already arrived in the rural southern town of Garhi Khuda Bakhsh ahead of Saturday’s ceremonies at the Bhutto family mausoleum there, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) spokesman Ijaz Durrani told AFP.
People were travelling by train, bus, car, bicycle and even on foot to reach the site, he said. Hundreds of thousands were expected to arrive by Saturday.
Benazir Bhutto, 54, was martyred on December 27, 2007 in a gun and suicide attack at an election rally in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, just two months after returning to Pakistan from exile.
President Asif Ali Zardari, Benazir’s widower, and her son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who Co-Chairs the PPP with his father, were expected to lead the procession of mourners on Saturday.
About 8,000 police, paramilitary rangers, party workers and volunteers have fanned out across the town to protect Zardari, his son, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and other dignitaries expected to attend, the PPP spokesman said.
The town was full of people carrying portraits of Bhutto, and vendors were doing a brisk business in Bhutto memorabilia, selling posters and CD recordings of her speeches.
Zardari has ordered local officials to arrange for meals for the mourners, Durrani said.
The government has declared Saturday a national holiday in honour of the charismatic Benazir Bhutto, the first woman to lead a Muslim nation.
Her killing shocked the world, and threw the country into chaos, sparking violence and leading to months of political turmoil that ended in September when Zardari claimed the presidency.
The home minister of southern Sindh province, Zulfiqar Mirza, has warned of the possibility of violence linked to the Benzair Bhutto commemorations, but provincial spokesman Waqar Mehdi said authorities had taken appropriate steps.
A special security wall has been erected around the mausoleum as part of a raft of precautions taken to safeguard Zardari.

Reacting on Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani''s statement that ''non state actors'' were behind the Mumbai Terror attacks, Sharma said that the statement of the Pakistani Prime Minister on non-state actors is surprising.
"All the non state actors are actors of the state. All the perpetrators behind the Mumbai terror attacks were Pakistani citizens," the Minister of State for External Affairs said.
Sahrma added: "It is time to act on the ground and Pakistan must dismantle terror infrastructure on its soil. We had written statements from Pakistan in the past that authorities would be taking action against militant outfits. It is not the time for words which is meaningless."
Earlier in the day, a pro-Taliban group Ansar Wa Mohajir has claimed responsibility for bomb explosion in Lahore, nailing Pakistan''s lies that they have arrested an Indian spy.
Toofan Wazir, identifying himself as a commander and spokesman of the group, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Lahore''s Senior Suprintendent of police (operations) Chaudhary Shafiq Ahmed had denied of any such arrest being made by the police.

JEDDAH: Kingdom of Saudi Arbia (KSA) to help ease tension between India and Pakistan as its Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal visiting New Delhi (today) Friday for talks with his Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee on bilateral, regional and international issues.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to visit Saudi Arabia early next year, sources in New Delhi said. Singh was set to visit Riyadh last month, but had to defer his plan due to prior commitments of King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.
Amid the fresh chill in the Indo-Pak ties, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Saud Al-Faisal will be in Delhi on a brief visit on Friday during which New Delhi is expected to urge the influential Arab nation to use its influence on Islamabad to end cross-border terrorism.
Al-Faisal will hold detailed talks with External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee during which the Indian side is expected to share evidence about involvement of Pakistan-based elements in the November 26 Mumbai attacks.

Pervez Elahi And Nawaz Sharif Meeting in Dubai

DUBAI/ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Muslim League-N Chief Nawaz Sharif and former chief minister Punjab Pervez Elahi have reportedly met here on Thursday.
Both the leaders had an exchange of views on the current political situation of Pakistan, sources said.
Sources further said that the meeting was arranged by common friends.
Hamza Shahbaz, son of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, was also present on the occasion, sources also informed.
It may be mentioned here that Nawaz Sharif arrived in Dubai on Wednesday on a private visit to meet his younger daughter.
However, Nawaz Sharif spokesman has denied that no such kind of meeting was held.

PESHAWAR: At least five shops were gutted early Friday when an explosion occurred in a market in Peshawar, reported ARY OneWorld.According to local officials, the explosive device went off outside an internet café in Ganj area of Peshawar, resulting destruction of five shops. Both in 1965 and 1971 India returned the areas it had occupied. From the very beginning India has helped Pakistan," said Makhan Singh, a farmer in Rajyawali Village, Abohar.People in India are confident that the Indian Army is strong enough to defend its borders. If a war breaks out, it would cause damage to Pakistan. Pakistan Offers To Buy Indian Share Of Lran Sponsored Gas Pipeline

Islamabad: Pakistan has proposed to buy the Indian share of gas from the proposed 7.5 billion dollar IPI pipeline.

"A team of energy experts led by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Petroleum and Natural Resources Asim Hussain would visit Iran on a two-day visit to discuss the deal," the Dawn quoted a source in the Pakistan petroleum ministry, as saying.

The delegation would try to persuade the Iranian authorities to sign the agreement in the next few months, even if India stayed out.

"We will try our best to convince the Iranian side of the need for starting work on the project as early as possible," an official in the ministry told Dawn.

Iran recently had said that it has plans to link the gas prices with that of crude oil in the Gulf market, with a ratio of 80 to 100 which means that if a barrel of crude oil is priced at
100 dollars in the international market, Iran will sell one million cubic feet of gas at 80 dollars. Also, the price of gas will not remain fixed but will fluctuate in accordance with the price of oil.

But what can be seen as a blow to Pakistan's proposal, Iran still wants India to be a part of the deal to counter growing US influence on its old ally in the energy sector.

Peshawar, Dec. 25 : The aggravating law and order situation in the provincial metropolis has forced the Christian community not to hold the Christmas fair at the Saint John Vianney Catholic Church, breaking the decades old tradition.

"The Christian community itself decided not to hold the fair keeping in view the present deteriorating security situation in the city," said Father Yousaf of Saint John Vianney Catholic Church.

"Neither the government, nor any security agency stopped us from arranging the fair but being responsible citizens of the country, we have decided not to take unnecessary risks," he was quoted by The News, as saying.

The father also said that special prayers would be offered for peace and security in the nation on Christmas day.

Apart from the disappointment of the traditional fair being cancelled, the Christian community has also failed to make proper preparations for the colourful festival because of deteriorating security situation in Peshawar.

In comparison to the last year, very limited number of Christians visited the bazaars for shopping gifts and festivities.

Another culprit to sour the mood of the community has been the price-rise. "Though prices of necessary items have gone beyond the buying capacity of common man, yet they have to celebrate the event and buy things for the purpose," said James Cyprian, a Peshawar-based journalist.

Many Christian employees have demanded that they too be disbursed salaries like done before Eid to celebrate their special event.
